作務衣(さむえ)とは
作務衣(さむえ)は、禅宗の僧侶が掃除を行うときに着る衣。昭和 40 年代に永平寺で用いられたものが最初といわれています。曹洞宗の僧侶が外出時などに着用する場合は、袖口と足首の部分はホコリやゴミが入らないよう、ゴム紐などで絞ってあるものが多いです。
修行僧は『黑』、住職などは『紺』や『茶』など黑以外の色を着用する場合が多いです。神社の神職も作務衣を使用しますが、この場合『白』、その名称は『白作務衣』などと言います。
着やすい為、現在では僧侶固有のものとしてではなく、甚平と共に単なる部屋着の一種として扱われ、熱心な 愛好者もいます。一般用には、上衣の上に羽織るちゃんちゃんこが付いたり、素材も刺子や紬の無地素材など、僧侶用とは異なる製品もあります。
